Loon Song

Authors: Sasha Sagan and Marcia M. Wakeland

Loon Song Reads Like a Dream
This wonderful book reads as soft and lovely as a poem. It is the perfect book to read as a 'bedtime' story - for readers of any age. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. This book is a real, true delight.

A must for every child and most adults
LOON SONG is a beautifully written story for children (and adults). I recently read it to a women in her eighties. She loved the story and talked of the loons she admired in Canada. Marcia Wakeland is a sensitive writer who educates us as she tells her story. The artist is a master. I will give LOON SONG to every child I know.

DELIGHTFUL!
This book is not just for children but for anyone who enjoys clever poetry combined with fun facts about some furry friends.

Brings you right to the Alaskan wilderness
I fell in love with this book while vacationing in Alaska. As a speech language pathologist, I work with children who have speech and language delays. They really enjoy the catchy rhymes while learning about wildlife not found in the Northeast region of our country.

Splendid Denali
Fantastic photos of one of the planet's most scenic places. An excellent book for families who love the outdoors and enjoy sharing time together. Consider "My Denali" a dream book, it is inspirational and darn pretty to read, over and over again.

Native Plants of Southeast Alaska

It's a must have!
This is a must-have book for anyone interested in the diverse plants found in the rainforests of SE Alaska. It is comprehensive and written in such a way that amateur and seasoned botanist can benefit from it. The best part is that with this guide, the reader does not need to wade through plants that are not in this area to find the species of interest. It covers only SE Alaska and covers it in a comprehensive way.

Several other books exist on plants of SE Alaska, but also cover a broad range beside, such as the whole state, or Alaska, BC and Washington. This one is specific to the region. I also like the fact it includes not only wildflowers, but trees, shrubs and ferns too. I'd recommend it to everyone, visitor or resident with a desire to know more about the plants of SE Alaska.

William Brown Ph.D.

Excellent reference
We met the author, Judy Hall, while she was a crew member on the Avacha, a Russian sailing boat cruising the eastern Pacific commemorating the 300th anniversary of the Russian Sailing Fleet. Judy has an indepth knowledge of southeast Alaska and shares this information in a very comprehensive and understandable way!

North Country Christmas (Last Wilderness Adventure)
Published in Paperback by Paws IV Pub (October, 1993)
Authors: Shelley Gill and Shannon Cartwright

Loved this book!
This is a book about a different kind of Christmas story. The setting and characters are magical and fun. The illustrations are fantastic and bright. I think this book would be good to read or be read to for someone ages one to ninty years old. This book can be read by someone nine years old. I know because I'm nine and I read it. This book taught me a new way to look at St. Nick and how people celebrate Christmas in another part of the country. I really enjoyed this book and I think everyone should read it too.

Yet another great regional christmas
I have started to gather regional christmas stories for my neice (like Cajun Night before)and this is an excellent addition! Yet again the sled is pulled by another animal - this time sled dogs! And the gifts left on each doorstep are northern Lights... Show a child another way to celebrate the holidays!

Northern Edge
Published in Hardcover by Donald I Fine (May, 1990)
Author: Barbara Quick
Average review score:

A fabulous evocation of both the Arctic & female camaraderie
Barbara Quick's novel draws you in with its promise of an adventure story set in the harsh Arctic wilderness, and this it certainly delivers, with marvelous descriptions of hard-won survival in the stark and surreally beautiful Alaskan tundra. But it is much more than a high adventure tale in the Jack London tradition: tucked within Quick's page-turning episodes of deadly storms, hungry bears, and fatal river crossings is one of the most memorable evocations of female friendships you will ever read. Add to this her many haunting images, such as birds taking their first flights and white-night sunsets, and you have a book that will hasten your reading to the end but remain in your mind for a long time afterwards.

Grab some tea and curl up...won't put it down!
Whew! A real testament to the ability of women to see themselves in a different light when they courageously attempt new adventures. I know this book is out of print but anyone who is interested in good reading should try to track this book down for their library! Guess you could call and beg from the publisher? Superb writing...Barbara's talent holds you to every page. Talk about your surprise endings! Makes you feel good to be female and cultivate any bit of bravery you might have hidden under your curled and sprayed hair. Puts a perspective back into your ironing...enjoyed this so much I would recommend it very highly! Makes you want to take a trip where you don't have to worry if your makeup is smudged. Waiting for the sequel...where does Tay go from there?

Northern Lights: A Hanukkah Story
Published in Hardcover by Kar-Ben Publishing (August, 1994)
Authors: Diana Cohen Conway and Shelly O. Haas
Average review score:

My favorite Hanukkah book
I am a teacher in an elementary school, and this is by far the most beautiful book I've found about Hanukkah. A snow storm prevents a pilot and his daughter from getting home for Hanukkah on a cold Alaskan night. The young girl tells the story of Hanukkah to an inuit woman and her daughter. They light an old oil lamp, and observe the northern lights together. It is a most beautiful and meaningful cultural exchange. The wonderful, realistic and colorful illustrations also add immensely to the beauty of the book.

Northern Lights: A Hanukkah Story
This book is excellent. When a little girl can't be home for Hanukkah, she shares the story and traditions with her new friends. This book not only offers a bit of Hanukkah, but some Eskimo culture as well. The pictures are beautiful and captivating. Children will love it.

Pacific High : Adventures in the Coast Ranges from Baja to Alaska
Published in Hardcover by Shearwater books (June, 2002)
Author: Tim Palmer
Average review score:

Adventure and Thoughts
Great book. Who says we have to travel to far away places for adventure? Tim Palmer had what for most of us would be a lifetime of adventures on this 9 month journey. At the same time the people he introduces us to and the observations he shares about all that he sees will make any reader think harder about our place on and responsibilities to this world.

A fun and meaningful journey
Pacific High is a wonderful blend of adventure, travel, natural history, personal reflection, and investigation of environmental issues that the author discovers as he makes his way from Baja to Alaska on a 9 month journey. The book offers a great way to become acquainted with the familiar-though little known Coast Range mountains that Palmer points out are in view of the west coast's biggest cities. And it is refreshingly well-written! The book has certainly inspired me to get to know the coast mountains in my own part of the range better.

The Reader's Companion to Alaska
Published in Paperback by Harvest Books (April, 1997)
Author: Alan Ryan

Really whets your appetite
The first couple of stories are the least fun. After that, it's a great compilation. The five-page diary of V. Swanson is worth the price of the book - and as affecting as any Robert Service poem. The compilation is good enough that I have tried to find some of the excerpted books, and will look for more of them. (John Haines's book was pretty good. A co-worker enjoyed it, too.) The acknowledgments at the end are useful.

The Reader's Companion to Alaska
This is a marvelous collection of essays written about life and travel in Alaska during the past 100 years. It has lots of well-known contributors: John McPhee, Ann Morrow Lindburgh, John Muir, Charles Kuralt, et al. But almost every piece, even from the most obscure writer, had me mesmerized. Perhaps the most haunting tale was a reprint of the diary entries from a man known only as "V. Swanson," who perished in a cabin in the wilderness in 1917.

I was fascinated by the stories of daredevils doing unbelievably brave and crazy things: climbing through ice caves buried within glaciers where the climbers literally had to inhale in order to squeeze through, knowing a shift in the ice could kill them all at any moment...climbing the face of Denali in winter, losing toes to frostbite...coming face to face with a grizzly who smashed in the window of a tiny cabin. Being decidedly NOT a daredevil myself, I would get most of the way through each of these stories scratching my head as to the motivation of these people. Generally, by the end of each story, I understood what made them tick. Reading these essays has made me feel life in Suburbia is just a little too boring, too timid, too soft.
